Preparing MDF Skirting and Mouldings for Painting

Our moisture-resistant MDF profiles are supplied unprimed, ready for your chosen finish. Select a primer and paint system suitable for MDF and follow the coating manufacturer’s instructions.

Check your boards first

Inspect the profile and dimensions before cutting or finishing. Room images show an example of the finished interior; the supplied product is not pre-painted.

Prepare the surface

Prepare faces and cut edges as directed by your chosen coating system. Remove dust carefully before coating and preserve the shaped detail during preparation.

Prime before painting

Check that your primer and topcoat are compatible. Pay particular attention to cut ends and shaped edges, and follow the manufacturer’s guidance on coverage, drying times and preparation between coats.

Understand moisture resistance

Moisture-resistant does not mean waterproof. These are interior joinery profiles: avoid direct wetting and do not use them as exterior or shower-area products. Ask about your intended application and coating system if you are planning a humid room.

Test your finish

Try the primer and paint on an offcut first. Look at the colour in daylight and evening lighting, and check that the finish keeps the profile detail clear.
