Choosing Dado Rails, Picture Rails and Decorative Mouldings

Choose decorative MDF mouldings for the detail you want to create: a line across the wall, a framed panel or a finished ceiling edge.

Dado rail: divide the wall

A dado rail defines the line between wall finishes or above panelling. Consider furniture, switches and existing features before deciding on its height.

Picture rail: upper-wall detail

A picture rail adds a traditional horizontal line below the ceiling. Compare its position with the tops of doors and windows. If you intend to hang pictures, ask about the profile and fixing arrangement before ordering; do not assume a decorative rail has a rated hanging load.

Astragal bead: frame panels

Use astragal bead to frame wall or door panels. Sketch the whole layout, including sockets and openings, then measure every side of every frame.

Cornice: finish the ceiling edge

A cornice provides a shaped finish where the wall meets the ceiling. Compare the profile and dimensions with the intended position before ordering.

Bring the room together

Choose a similar level of detail across your profiles and consider how the paint colours will work together. Use the product images and dimensions to make your choice rather than relying only on profile names.

Measure and prepare

Our shop mouldings are moisture-resistant MDF, supplied unprimed in 2.4m lengths. Measure at the intended fitting height and allow for cuts, corners and joints. Check a cutting plan before placing your order.
